Miammiam und Jean Leblanc
SHOWCASE WEEKEND
21-22-23 April 2017
OPENING NIGHT

After a successful premiere at SLOW Galerie in March, the exhibition now comes to Berlin, to Galerie Serigraffeur.
On a freezing −15°C night in January, Miammmiam and Jean Leblanc met for the first time at a flat-share party in West Berlin, under a disco ball. Both artists created handmade screen prints for their latest idea.
The theme chosen for the exhibition is the Berlin district they share: KREUZBERG.
Jean and Miam present an unusual portrait of a Berlin neighbourhood, far from the clichés of the capital – close-ups of a street front, a focus on the residents and the squirrels playing in the cemetery… Besides the choice of perspective, screen printing is the other star of this show. Although both artists work in the same studio (Stattlab e.V., check it out), they handle the technique very differently.

Jean Leblanc, a graduate of the Beaux-Arts de Rates and the École des Gobelins in Paris, worked in an advertising agency and as a teacher before devoting himself entirely to illustration. His graphic work and surrealist themes clearly show his admiration for artists such as Magritte, Escher or Tom Wesselmann. For KOPFKINO, Jean comes back to reality and invites us into the everyday life around him. He still translates the mood into his graphic style, breaking free from the rules of perspective and choosing minimalist shapes and broad, loose areas of colour.
Miammiam sketches a playful world populated by cute and wondrous creatures, yet inspired by and very close to reality. Her surrealist touch turns everyday life into a detailed bestiary in which humans mingle with cats, foxes and rabbits.
For KOPFKINO, she draws by hand with ink and pencil how wildlife bursts into the city and into the habits of its residents. Without any computer graphics, she experiments with the different colour layers and makes brilliant use of overprinting.
